Product Questions

I bought tire chains but they’re too big

If you purchased tire chains that are the wrong size, we recommend calling our in-house experts to find the best solution. It may be best to return the chains for another pair of the right size, or they may just need to be adjusted.

Adjusting chain links yourself can be difficult to do without the proper tools and expertise, and may not result in a secure or effective fit. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and use caution when making any adjustments to tire chains.

Again, please contact us if you do not have experience in this area. We’ll help you figure out what’s best for your situation.

Do tire chains need to fit exactly?

Yes, tire chains need to fit the exact size and type of tire that they are intended for. Tire chains that are too loose can cause damage to both the chains and the tire, and may also affect the handling and performance of the vehicle. For questions about your tire chains, please contact our chain experts.

How tight should tire chains be?

Tire chains should be tight enough to provide good traction. When installing tire chains, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, as different brands and models of chains may have different guidelines for proper tightness. In general, though, here are some tips for ensuring your tire chains are the correct tightness:

  • Make sure the chains are centered on the tire and that they cover as much of the tire tread as possible.
  • Adjust the chains as needed to remove any slack or looseness. You may need to drive the vehicle forward a short distance to allow the chains to settle into place before tightening them further.
  • Check the chains periodically during use to make sure they remain tight and properly positioned.

Remember that tire chains are designed to provide extra traction in slippery conditions, but they are not a substitute for safe driving habits. Always drive slowly and carefully when using tire chains, and avoid sudden movements or abrupt stops that could cause the chains to break or become damaged.

Are tire chains hard to put on?

Installing tire chains can be a bit challenging, especially if you’ve never done it before. With some practice and patience, most people should be able to install them without too much difficulty.

The type of chains also will change how hard they are to install. Some tire chains are designed to be easier to install than others, with features like self-tightening mechanisms or quick-release latches that make the process faster and more user-friendly.

No matter what, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and take your time during the installation process. It’s also a good idea to practice installing the chains in a safe and controlled environment, such as a parking lot, before you need to use them in real-world conditions.

How do I install self-tightening (automatic) tire chains?

The process of installing self-tightening or automatic tire chains will vary slightly depending on the specific brand and model of the chains you have. However, in general, here are the steps you can follow to install self-tightening tire chains:

  1. Check the tire size: Before you begin, make sure the tire chains are the correct size for your vehicle’s tires. Check the owner’s manual or the tire sidewall for the size information.
  2. Prepare the chains: Lay the tire chains out on a flat surface and check them for any damage or wear. Make sure they are clean and untangled.
  3. Position the vehicle: Find a level, clear area to install the tire chains. Make sure the vehicle is parked securely and the parking brake is engaged.
  4. Install the chains: Position the tire chains around the tire, making sure they are centered and straight. Connect the hooks or clasps at the back of the tire, then drive the vehicle forward a few feet so that the chains wrap around the tire.
  5. Engage the self-tightening mechanism: Depending on the specific brand and model of your tire chains, you may need to engage a self-tightening mechanism manually or it may engage automatically once the vehicle is in motion. Make sure the chains are snug and tight around the tire.
  6. Test the chains: Drive the vehicle slowly and carefully to test the chains and make sure they are properly installed and functioning. Listen for any unusual noises and feel for any unusual vibrations.
  7. Adjust the chains: If the chains are too loose or too tight, stop the vehicle and make adjustments as needed. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adjusting the chains.
  8. Repeat the process: Install the chains on the remaining tires, following the same steps as above.

Always read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before installing and using self-tightening tire chains, as the installation process may vary depending on the specific brand and model. Additionally, always practice safe driving habits when using tire chains, and be aware that they may affect your vehicle’s handling and braking.

How do tire chains help with traction?

The tire chains work by creating more contact between the tire and the surface of the road. They are designed to fit over the tire and to bite into the snow and ice, providing more traction and grip. This can be especially helpful when driving on steep hills or on roads that are covered in packed snow or ice.

It’s important to note that tire chains can only help to a certain extent. They are not a substitute for good driving habits, and they won’t guarantee that you won’t slide or lose control of your vehicle. It’s always important to drive slowly and carefully in wintry conditions, regardless of whether you have tire chains on your vehicle. Additionally, tire chains should only be used on vehicles with appropriate tires and on roads where they are legal and safe to use.

How much do snow chains cost?

The cost of snow chains can vary depending on the size of your tires, the type of chain you choose, and especially the vehicle you’re buying chains for. A basic pair of snow chains can cost around $100, while higher-end models can cost $200 – $500. Some factors that can affect the cost of snow chains include the materials used to make them, the level of durability and performance they offer, and any additional features or accessories they may have. Do you put tire chains on all your tires?

Tire chains are typically installed on the drive wheels of a vehicle, which are the wheels that receive power from the engine. In many cases, this means installing chains on the rear wheels of a vehicle, particularly if it is a rear-wheel drive car or truck. For front-wheel drive vehicles, chains are typically installed on the front wheels. In some cases, chains may also be installed on all four tires of a vehicle for added traction and safety in snowy or icy conditions. However, it’s important to note that tire chains should only be used in conditions where they are appropriate and legal, and they should be removed as soon as they are no longer needed.

What is my tire size?

The best way to find out your tire size is to check the information on the sidewall of your tire or consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual. The tire size will be displayed as a series of numbers and letters such as P215/60R16.
