Properly Installing Lawn Tractor Tire Chains

  1. Begin by laying down your untangled tire chains directly behind the lawn tractor.

  2. Make sure the side chain fastener is on the outside of the tire.

  3. The hook needs to be on the inside of the tire.

  4. Check that the tire chain is flat, and the side chain hooks are pointed out and away from the tires.

  5. Before putting the chains on, make sure the vehicle is turned off.

  6. Slowly pull the vehicle over the chains until the tires are centered on the chains.

  7. Pull the front half of the chains over the tire, making sure the links are evenly spaced apart.

  8. While lifting the back half of the chains, thread the chain hook through the chain link.

  9. Pull the ends of the chains toward each other.

  10. Fasten your chain and attach it as centered and tight as possible to prevent damage to your vehicle.

  11. To promote even wear, and keep the chains in position, you can also attach spider bungees across the outside chains. If your tire chains have any extra chain lengths, use a bungee to hold them in place and out of the way.
