How to Install ATV/UTV Tire Chains

Read in 2 minutes

Don’t let snow and ice slow you down in the winter. Installing tire chains on your ATV or UTV can increase project efficiency and enhance your safety. Properly installing chains is important to making sure you don’t damage your chains or tires, while getting maximum use out of them.

Our below video and guide will help show you how to correctly install chains on your ATV/UTV.
In the video we will be using diamond v-bar chains and an adjustable spider bungee .

Getting Started Placing Chains

  1. Start by laying the chains down flat on the ground behind the drive tires of the ATV/UTV.

  2. Make sure the chain fastener end is pointing towards the front of the vehicle, while the chain without clips faces the rear.

  3. Remove any tangles and check for broken links or other visible issues in the chains.

  4. Once you have fine-tuned the position of your chains, back your ATV onto the center of the tire chains.

  5. Pull the chain evenly over the front of the tire and place them on the top of the tire.

  6. Bring the ends of the chain together and feed the chain fastener (boomer hook) through the hanging chain link.

  7. Clip the fastener to the side of the chain.

  8. Repeat this process (steps 6 & 7) on the inside of the tire.

  9. Once both fasteners are attached, slip the first inner chain through its corresponding loop.

  10. Pull the inner chain tight and over to the outside of the chain, promoting even coverage of the chain on the tire.

  11. Use a shackle or U-bolt on the last link of the inner chain to lock it into position.

  12. Repeat this process for both inner chains.

  13. Once the inner chains have been secured and have a snug fit on the tire, refasten the chains as needed to provide an extra secure attachment. Be sure to adjust the chains after driving a couple hundred feet.

  14. An adjustable spider bungee keeps your chains tight and in place when applied evenly on the exterior of your tire chains. If your tire chains have any extra chain links, use the bungee to hold them in place and out of the way.
