How to Find Your Tire Size for Chains

Read in 2 minutes

Before you can buy the right tire chains, you need one key detail: your tire size. Don’t worry, it’s easier to find than you think. Plus, we’re going to show you how to use our search using your tire size!

Where to Find Your Tire Size

Your tire size is printed on the sidewall of your tire. It will be a combination of numbers and letters that describe:

  • Tire width
  • Aspect ratio (sometimes omitted on larger tires)
  • Wheel diameter

How to Read Your Tire Size

Most passenger vehicles use three-number formats, while tractors and heavy equipment often use two-number formats.

Example 1: Standard Tire (Three Numbers)

205/40R17

  • 205 = Tire width in millimeters (Size 1)
  • 40 = Aspect ratio (sidewall height compared to width, Size 2)
  • 17 = Rim diameter in inches (Rim Size)

Example 2: Tractor or Heavy Equipment Tire (Two Numbers)

7.00-14

  • 7.00 = Tire width in inches (Size 1)
  • 14 = Rim diameter in inches (Rim Size)

👉 If you have a larger tire with only 2 numbers, you’ll skip the “Size 2” since there is none.
